After the September 18 Incident in 1931, Zhao Yiman (played by Shi Lianxing) was appointed by the Party Committee as the secretary of the Harbin General Trade Union, where she, along with Lao Cao (played by Zhang Ping), led the trolley factory workers in an anti-Japanese strike movement. Soon after, Lao Cao was arrested and sacrificed. In 1934, Zhao became a member of the CCP's Zhuhe County Committee and the secretary of the Tiebei District Committee, organizing militia forces to conduct guerrilla warfare against the Japanese invaders. In the autumn, the peasant self-defense team she led met up with the anti-Japanese forces led by Captain Wang (played by Wang Yan). When news arrived that the Red Army's Long March had reached Shaanxi, the troops held a celebratory gathering, but unexpectedly the camp was surrounded by the Japanese. Zhao Yiman led her team to break through, but as more enemies appeared, she ordered Captain Wang to lead the main force to retreat while she, with a portion of the soldiers, covered their escape.
