Single mother Jane (played by Heather Locklear) lives with her two daughters, Holly (played by Hilary Duff) and Zoe. While Jane is quite adept at taking care of her two daughters, she struggles with her own love life, constantly starting relationships with unsuitable men, which quickly lead to problems and breakups. The cycle of changing boyfriends is tough on her daughters, who often find themselves moving from one boyfriend’s house to another, from one city to the next. In hopes of giving her mother a normal life, Holly decides to help Jane find a reliable perfect man. When she discovers that Jane's kind-hearted coworker, Lanny, is starting to pursue her, Holly sets her plan in motion. She secretly sends flowers, emails, and love letters to Jane in Lanny’s name, but the earnest and somewhat clueless Lanny struggles to win Jane's heart. Holly’s efforts escalate, but things begin to spiral out of control.
