This is a story about the playboy scholar Feng Xiangru, who meets the woman in red, Xin Shisi Niang, through a matchmaker. The two become a married couple. In the early days of their marriage, they are very happy together. However, Feng soon returns to his old ways, indulging in flirtations and promiscuity, which eventually leads to his wrongful imprisonment. Xin Shisi Niang goes to great lengths to rescue him, not hesitating to sully her reputation, and ultimately clears his name. After Feng is released from prison, he shows no gratitude and instead blames Xin Shisi Niang for her fall from grace.
