This film is adapted from Shen Congwen's novel of the same name. The story takes place in the early years of the Republic of China in a small mountain town on the border of northwest Hunan, where an old ferryman (played by Feng Hanyuan) operates a ferry, helping people cross the river. He lives a simple life with his granddaughter Cuicui (played by Dai Na). Seventeen years ago, Cuicui's mother had an out-of-wedlock child with a soldier, and both later died tragically together. The old ferryman hopes to avoid history repeating itself for Cuicui and wishes to entrust her to a reliable person. The ferryman’s neighbor Shunshun has two sons—Big Brother Tianbao (played by Liu Kui) and Second Brother Nuo Song (played by Shi Lei). Both fall in love with Cuicui, but Cuicui loves Second Brother. On the night of the Dragon Boat Festival three years ago, Cuicui coincidentally met Second Brother, and the seeds of their feelings were quietly sown at that moment. Later, the two brothers decided to let Cuicui choose through singing love songs. However, for various reasons, the singing never resumed, followed by the tragic news of Big Brother drowning. Although Second Brother still loves Cuicui, he leaves out of anger over his brother's death. One stormy night, the old ferryman dies of depression. Cuicui finally understands many things and waits by the ferry for Second Brother to return... This film won the Jury's Honorary Award at the 9th Montreal International Film Festival in Canada.
