Jim (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) is a high school student at a Catholic school and also a member of one of the best high school basketball teams in New York. He spends his days hanging out with three other players from the team, skipping class, using drugs, stealing, and getting into fights; their youth is recklessly squandered on the streets of New York. Jim documents his life in his "basketball diary." Later, Jim's best friend Bobby dies of leukemia, which strikes Jim hard. Due to a "surprise" from Nicky, Jim starts using psychedelic drugs and soon becomes addicted. The lack of communication with his mother, the harsh and simple education from the school’s priest, and the sexual harassment from the team’s coach all pull Jim deeper into self-destruction. Every time he suffers from drug cravings, he and his friends go to great lengths to get money for drugs, and Jim falls into the abyss of degradation… This film is based on the autobiographical novel by writer and musician Jim Carroll.
