The annual Lunar New Year is approaching, and the elderly Cheng couple (Li Baotian & Zhao Lirong) living in a rural area of Northeast China are eagerly anticipating the return of their children for the holiday. Last year's reunion dinner ended unhappily, so the mother hopes even more for a joyful reunion this time. Soon, the children return one after another: the eldest son (Liu Xiaolingtong) is dull and honest, the eldest daughter-in-law (Ding Jiali) is bold and unreasonable; the sister-in-law's husband (Ge You) is wayward, flirting outside, and even forcefully insists on an abortion from his wife; the younger son (Liang Tian) is unambitious, indulging in pleasure and only knows how to ask for money; the father's favorite second daughter initially defied her father's wishes to marry a carpenter (Shen Junyi) but has now become self-sufficient and is bringing her successful young family back home. Although the brothers and sisters-in-law seem to be celebrating harmoniously, each has their own hidden agenda, and it is uncertain how this year's New Year's Eve dinner will end... Zhao Lirong won the Best Actress Award at the 4th Tokyo International Film Festival for this film.
