In 1986, in Dallas, Texas, homophobic electrician Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey) discovers that he has "the gay disease" — AIDS, with only 30 days to live. The AZT (zidovudine) he is using is the only FDA-approved anti-AIDS drug available at the time, but it has severe toxicity. To survive, Ron begins researching various anti-AIDS prescriptions and alternative treatments, even smuggling unapproved medications from around the world. With the help of Dr. Saks (Jennifer Garner) and transgender gay man Rayon (Jared Leto), Ron starts an underground organization called the "Dallas Buyers Club," providing AIDS patients with more "alternative therapies," many of whom are gay men seeking his assistance. His actions naturally meet resistance and pressure from the FDA and pharmaceutical companies. Ron ultimately passed away in September 1992, 2557 days after being told he had only 30 days to live. Throughout this nearly seven-year period, he persistently fought against the disease, the FDA, and drug companies, truly enjoying a life well-lived... This film is based on a true story and depicts how a terminally ill patient strives for survival while saving thousands facing the same plight, earning nominations for Best Actor/Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes and winning a total of 29 awards.
