Captain Whip Whitaker (played by Denzel Washington) drives Flight 227 out of Orlando. However, when attempting to cross through the clouds, the plane experiences an unexpected malfunction. In an emergency, the experienced Whip makes an emergency landing in a vacant lot in front of a small church. Miraculously, Whip manages to control the plane and safely brings everyone back to the ground. After the accident, Whip becomes a national hero. However, the Federal Aviation Administration launches an investigation into the incident, revealing that the truth behind the accident is related to Whip's drug abuse and alcoholism.
