In September 2006, a three-man reconnaissance team from Palarus set out from their outpost, overlooking the Kajaki reservoir in southern Afghanistan, to participate in the fight against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. As they crossed a dry riverbed, one of them unfortunately stepped on a landmine, which had actually been left over from the Russian occupation about 25 years prior. His comrades rushed to his side, only to find themselves surrounded by an unknown number of landmines, with every step they took posing the risk of severe injury or even death.
