Tom (David Strathairn) and Gail (Meryl Streep) are a couple whose relationship has grown distant. To mend their bond, they decide to take their son Roarke (Joseph Mazzello) and their dog on a rafting adventure—Gail once bravely navigated the treacherous confluence known as the Iron Gloves. Along the way, they encounter Wade (Kevin Bacon), Terry (John C. Reilly), and Frank, with Wade's small tricks earning him Roarke's admiration as a hero. However, Frank mysteriously disappears, and suddenly Wade and Terry reveal their sinister true selves—they are criminals on the run after a big heist. Wade takes Tom and Roarke hostage, threatening Gail to guide them through the Iron Gloves. Tom accidentally escapes from their grasp and prepares an ambush downstream with their dog. Brave Gail faces the Iron Gloves again, this time to rescue her son. Tom and Gail join forces downstream, fighting not only for survival but also rediscovering their love through shared struggles.
