In the turbulent times of the early Republic, the nation was in chaos and warlords divided the land, leaving the people suffering. Cao Yun (played by Brigitte Lin) is the daughter of the powerful warlord General Cao and also a patriot. She is unwilling to see her father help Yuan Shikai borrow huge sums from foreign banks in the name of the nation, which would worsen the country's financial situation. Thus, she secretly contacts revolutionaries. Torn between her loyalty to the nation and her father, Cao Yun finds herself in deep inner conflict. Bai Niu (played by Sally Yeh) grew up in a theater troupe called Chunhe, where the troupe's master (played by Wu Ma) treated her as a servant. Obsessed with performing, she has always hoped to take the stage but has never had the opportunity; Xiang Hong (played by Chung Chohung) is a greedy courtesan who steals a large box of jewels from a fleeing warlord, inadvertently bringing the jewels into Chunhe.
