Successful lawyer Matt (played by George Clooney) sees his wife turn into a vegetable due to an accident. Recently, doctors informed him that her time is running out, which has hit him hard. Meanwhile, as the heir to a Hawaiian island, he is also negotiating development matters with a trust fund. Amid the chaos, his two daughters also cause him distress: his younger daughter, Scottie (played by Amara Miller), often curses at classmates, forcing Matt to take her personally to apologize; his older daughter, Alexandra (played by Shailene Woodley), who lives at a boarding school, drinks heavily every day. With their mother gravely ill, Matt hopes Alexandra will put aside her hostility toward her mother, but she reveals the reason for their rift—she discovered her mother's infidelity. This completely shatters Matt's impression of his wife. He goes to seek confirmation from his wife's best friend, and the answer turns out to be the same. Left in the dark, Matt feels both disappointed and angry, and begins to investigate with his daughter to find the third party… This film won the Best Adapted Screenplay Award at the 84th Academy Awards.
