In a small town in the American West, Sheriff Franklin Hunt (played by Kurt Russell) shoots a suspicious drifter one night. He then calls in the town doctor, Samantha (played by Lili Simmons), to treat the suspect. As the night goes on, a mysterious intruder brutally kills a stableman, and both the suspect and Samantha go missing. Franklin feels the gravity of the situation and gathers Samantha's husband, Arthur O'Dwyer (played by Patrick Wilson), and other villagers at the local tavern to discuss the events, leading to the discovery that a mysterious cave-dweller may be responsible. This group of savages practices incest and may even eat humans, including their own mothers.
