Anna (Emily Browning) is devastated by the death of her ailing mother in a fire, even attempting suicide. After a period of mental rehabilitation, Anna is allowed to return to her long-abandoned home, where her father Stephen (David Strathairn), a writer, and her close sister Alex (Arielle Kebbel) await, along with her future stepmother—her mother's former nurse Rachel (Elizabeth Banks), whom she struggles to deal with. During this time, Anna begins to see horrifying visions of her mother, and her friend Matt (Jesse Moss) claims to have witnessed everything from the night of the fire. Various signs suggest that Anna's mother did not die accidentally, leading the sisters to suspect Rachel as the murderer. Soon after, Matt is killed, casting a dark cloud over Anna's family. The nearly broken girl finds herself wandering between reality and illusion...
