A historical opera film that depicts the famous play "Dou E Yuan" created by the Yuan Dynasty playwright Guan Hanqing, criticizing the treacherous officials of the time and exposing the crimes of corrupt officials, who were harmed by the emperor’s favorites. The story of the struggle in a death cell praises Guan Hanqing's indomitable spirit. The main plot is as follows: During the Yuan Dynasty, treachery was rampant. Guan Hanqing witnesses the unjust death of a young widow, Zhu Xiaolan, and, with the support and encouragement of the singer Zhu Lianxiu, he writes the zaju "Dou E Yuan," with Zhu Lianxiu playing the role of Dou E, the incarnation of Zhu Xiaolan, condemning the evil of corrupt officials. The emperor’s favorite, A He Ma, orders a revision of the script, but Guan Hanqing firmly refuses, and he and Zhu Lianxiu are imprisoned in a death cell. They do not yield; Guan Hanqing writes “Die Shuang Fei” in prison as a gift to Zhu Lianxiu, expressing their unwavering spirit and loyal love.
