The young Empress of Austria, Sissi (played by Romy Schneider), travels extensively throughout Hungary, feeling the unpolitical enthusiasm of its people towards her, and she deeply falls in love with the country and its people. This is the only way for her to escape the pressures of her royal life in Vienna. However, while she is in Hungary soothing the reluctant nobility alongside Count Andrássy,Archduchess Sophie (played by Vilma Degischer) spreads rumors about Sissi and the Count. Franz (played by Karlheinz Böhm) remains focused on national affairs, allowing his mother Sophie to meddle in state matters, including the upbringing of their daughter. When Sissi is diagnosed with severe tuberculosis, Franz follows his mother's wishes and lets the doctors take their daughter away from Sissi. Sissi is sent to a distant island to recuperate, and in her lonely and helpless state, she gradually recovers under her mother's careful nursing. After her recovery, Sissi accompanies Franz on a visit to northern Italy, where nationalists strongly oppose Austrian rule and show great hostility towards the royal family. However, when Sissi and her daughter reunite in St. Mark's Square, the kind-hearted Sissi touches the Italian people, and they warmly welcome the reunion of her and her daughter.
