Star (Sasha Lane) lives a life of dependency with her sister and alcoholic father, as the two siblings survive by scavenging for leftover food in dumpsters. Furthermore, Star endures abuse and harassment from her father, leading her mental state to gradually spiral into despair. One day, Star meets a man named Jake (Shia LaBeouf), who is the leader of a magazine sales team. Invited by Jake, Star ultimately decides to board a van heading towards freedom and completely leave her absurd family behind. In this way, Star becomes a magazine salesperson under Jake's guidance. During this time, a passionate relationship develops between Jake and Star, yet Jake has been maintaining a physical relationship with their immediate boss, Krista (Riley Keough).
