1965 was the era of Martin Luther King, the Black Panthers, the Beatles, and white dominance in basketball. High school girls' basketball coach Don Haskins (played by Josh Lucas) receives a job offer from Texas Western College. Although the salary is low—they will have to live temporarily in the boys' dormitory, and the board's funding is insufficient to attract high-level athletes—Haskins accepts the position to coach an NCAA Division I team and immediately begins an extensive search for talented Black players. The coaching staff eventually locates seven gifted Black athletes, each with distinct personalities and strengths.
