High school girls' basketball coach Don Haskins (played by Josh Lucas) receives a job offer from Texas Western College. Although the salary is low—they will have to live temporarily in the boys' dormitory, and the board's funding is insufficient to attract high-level athletes—Haskins accepts the position to coach an NCAA Division I team and immediately begins an extensive search for talented Black players. The coaching staff eventually locates seven gifted Black athletes, each with distinct personalities and strengths. After a passionate confrontation, the Black and white players quickly bond and immerse themselves in Haskins' rigorous training. The players' occasional violations and differing basketball philosophies lead to mutual growth for the coach and the players... Finally, the moment of the season's start arrives. The Texas Western team triumphs despite the violent threats of racists and the disdain of some in the media, and Coach Haskins decides to push forward with his Black players towards the pinnacle of the glory road…
