Zach (Freddie Prinze Jr.) is handsome and academically gifted, making him the envy of his high school. However, even he has unspoken troubles and confusion. His girlfriend, Taylor (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe), is showing interest in Brock (Matthew Lillard), who is far inferior to Zach in every way, which Zach finds hard to accept. To reclaim his pride, Zach boldly claims he can turn any girl into a prom queen. However, when he meets the girl he is supposed to transform, Laney (Rachael Leigh Cook), he is taken aback. Laney is a well-known misfit, with a dated style and a mind full of eccentric ideas. Turning such a girl into a popular darling in a short time poses a huge challenge for Zach.
