On a midsummer night when the Duke's father was away, the servant Jean (Colin Farrell) and the cook Christine (Samantha Morton) tease each other, while Julie (Jessica Chastain) eagerly wants Jean to dance with her. Initially, Jean refuses due to their class differences, but eventually, they engage in a relationship. Afterward, Julie feels confused and lost, while Jean's attitude towards her deteriorates sharply, leading to verbal conflicts between them. Julie begs Jean to take her away, even stealing money from her father, which is discovered by Jean's lover, the cook Christine. To prevent them from leaving, Christine kills Julie's pet bird. Heartbroken, Julie and Jean find themselves in a stalemate, and just then, Julie's father returns. Jean quickly realizes the reality and returns to his original status. Julie feels a mix of sadness and rage with no way out, while Jean, in an attempt to protect himself, encourages Julie to take drastic measures.
