Former football player Mike (Warren Beatty) encounters the beautiful Terry (Annette Bening) on a flight to Sydney. The flight faces danger and makes an emergency landing on a coral island. The two join hands to overcome this challenge, developing deep feelings for each other. A cruise ship carries the passengers to their destination. During their time together on the ship, Mike and Terry's relationship deepens, but they are unable to cross the line due to their respective engagements. After the journey, they agree to annul their engagements and meet three months later in a New York skyscraper. They promise that if one of them does not appear, the other will no longer disturb their lives. Three months later, Mike shows up as scheduled, but Terry has yet to arrive…
