In 1948, Gabriel González Videla, the Chilean president who came to power with the support of the Chilean Communist Party, fell out with his communist co-governors, subsequently declaring the Communist Party illegal and launching massive arrests and persecution. Poet and senator Pablo Neruda openly published articles mocking President González Videla, placing himself in danger, and was forced to seek refuge within the country before successfully escaping to Mexico in 1949. This unique biographical film by Pablo Larraín focuses on this historical period, cleverly mixing factual events with fictional elements. In the film, Neruda is pursued by a detective named Oscar Peluchonneau, who swears to bring the poet to justice, and his narrative runs throughout the film as voice-over.
