On July 29, 1996, after successfully conducting its last nuclear test, China announced to the world that it would temporarily cease nuclear tests starting from July 30. When this news reached across the ocean, the renowned Chinese-American physicist Professor Yang Zhenning敏锐地意识到 that it was a special commemorative day carefully chosen by the Chinese government and people to honor the "father of the two bombs," Deng Jiaxian, who sadly passed away on this day ten years earlier. As a close friend of Deng Jiaxian, Yang Zhenning could not help but shed tears. In 1958, Dr. Deng Jiaxian returned to China after studying in the United States and took on the secret task of developing atomic bombs, thus starting a life of obscurity as he worked on the theoretical design of China’s atomic bomb. As a theoretical physicist, Deng led the theoretical design department at the Institute of Nuclear Weapons Research. Despite lacking any theoretical references and technical resources, Deng and his team worked hard and successfully achieved a breakthrough, providing the theoretical design necessary for the birth of China’s first atomic bomb, making significant contributions. On October 16, 1964, China successfully detonated its first atomic bomb in the western region, announcing to the world its military and technological strength, altering the global political and military power dynamics, and enhancing China's international status and prestige, with Deng Jiaxian playing an indispensable role. Subsequently, Deng organized and led the theoretical design work for China's first hydrogen bomb. On June 17, 1967, China successfully detonated its first hydrogen bomb, shocking the world. Afterwards, Deng also made significant contributions to the development of neutron bombs and the miniaturization of nuclear weapons. In 1971, after careful mediation and arrangements by Premier Zhou Enlai, Yang Zhenning finally returned to his homeland after more than twenty years. The first person on his list of people he wanted to meet was his close friend Deng Jiaxian. However, at that time, Deng was suffering criticism at a study session in the northwest testing base. When he received a central government notification and traveled thousands of miles back to a hotel in Beijing to see his old friend Yang Zhenning, he was unable to answer simple questions like "What work are you engaged in, and why have you had no news after returning?" feeling very awkward. Yang then changed his questioning approach and asked, “I heard that China’s atomic bomb and hydrogen bomb were developed with the help of two Americans; is that true?” This question also left Deng at a loss for words. With skepticism and regret, Yang left Beijing for a visit to Shanghai. Premier Zhou soon learned of this and called Deng Jiaxian to ask him to convey to Yang Zhenning, “China's 'two bombs' were completely developed by the Chinese themselves, without any foreign participation.” When Yang Zhenning received this letter from Deng Jiaxian in the banquet hall of the Shanghai Hotel, he was so overcome with emotion that he rushed into the restroom, tears streaming down his face. He firmly believed that the talented Deng Jiaxian must have been the creator and great contributor to China’s "two bombs." In the mid-1970s, for reasons of confidentiality and military readiness, the Institute of Nuclear Weapons Research was secretly relocated to the northern mountainous area of Sichuan to continue its nuclear weapon development work. After the arrest of the Gang of Four, Director Deng Jiaxian, affected by nuclear radiation, became extremely weak. He was later diagnosed with malignant tumors and cancer that had metastasized throughout his body, yet he persistently worked while battling illness, racing against death as he entered the final sprint phase. He returned to the vast Gobi Desert where the first atomic bomb had been detonated, feeling the winds and sands of the desolate desert. Reflecting on the past, the world political landscape had changed profoundly, but his loyal heart to the motherland and people remained steadfast. After participating in the last underground nuclear test, Deng finally fell ill and was sent to the Beijing PLA General Hospital for treatment. During the nearly thirty years of secretly working on nuclear weapons research, Deng Jiaxian not only sacrificed personal fame and life but also made his wife Xu Luxi and their children endure untold mental suffering and hardships, yet they silently bore it all until Deng was forced to leave his post and return to being an ordinary husband and father. However, it all seemed too late. In the summer of 1986, Deng Jiaxian entered the last journey of his life. He arranged his funeral matters with the central government and colleagues, facing death calmly. He had his guard accompany him to Tiananmen Square to bid farewell to the motherland and the people. In his last moments, his lifelong friend Yang Zhenning came to his bedside, but Deng was already in a coma; by the time he revived, Yang had flown back to the United States, leaving behind a lifelong regret. Their daughter, who was studying in the US, received the bad news of her father’s critical condition and flew back to be by his side. When she rushed breathlessly into the critical care room and saw her father Deng Jiaxian, filled with tubes and near death, the father and daughter both burst into tears uncontrollably. In the autumn of 2009, during the 60th anniversary celebration of the People's Republic of China, the spirit of the "father of the two bombs," Deng Jiaxian, seemed to return to the majestic Tiananmen Square, to the solemn People's Hero Monument. He sat alone on the steps of the monument, gazing affectionately at the soaring flock of doves. Amidst the coos of the doves, tears streamed down Deng Jiaxian's face.
