The film employs a large number of non-professional actors, with the story constructed around the real lives of the participants. Beyond realism, the director injects many magical and surreal absurdities, such as a Russian blue-eyed cat appearing at night and rockets slowly ascending. The film is filled with numerous hints and meanings, complemented by magnificent lakes and picturesque village scenery, making it a poetic and tranquil experience throughout, being referred to as the biggest surprise of that year's Venice Film Festival. A postman, who navigates a speedboat across a remote northern Russian island, is the only link between the villagers and the outside world. Although civilization is just across the lake, the people in the village maintain a simple and self-sufficient life. There are no government agencies, social welfare, or employment demands; the postman becomes the sole bridge for communication with the outside world. Every day, he delivers letters to each household and chats with different villagers. He shows concern for an elderly alcoholic living alone and harbors a secret affection for the widow Irina, often caring for her son. However, Irina chooses to move to the city for work, and the motor of his speedboat is stolen, disrupting the existence and meaning of his life... The film's director was awarded Best Director at the 71st Venice Film Festival.
