The story takes place in America during the 1960s, where Llewyn (played by Oscar Isaac) is an obscure folk singer living a hard life; he is homeless and has no steady job, relying on the charity of friends to find shelter each night. Despite his predicament, the stubborn Llewyn refuses to conform to popular tastes and make desperate changes. As a result, his relationships with his long-time friends Jean (Carey Mulligan) and Jim (Justin Timberlake) have reached a freezing point. To make matters worse, Llewyn learns that Jean is pregnant with his child. Afterward, Llewyn travels to Chicago in an attempt to find work, but after an interview, he is rejected. With nothing to show for his efforts, he returns to Greenwich Village and continues working at a small tavern where he once had a part-time job. In familiar surroundings, with familiar music and atmosphere, Llewyn has experienced much, yet it feels as if nothing has truly happened.
