In August 1945, after Japan's surrender, the Communist Party of China (CPC) sought to promote cooperation between the Kuomintang (KMT) and itself to avoid a civil war. At the invitation of Chiang Kai-shek (played by Sun Feihu), Mao Zedong (played by Gu Yue) flew alone to Chongqing to "discuss the national situation" with Chiang.
