This is a film adapted by Yoko Mizuki from the same-titled novel by the representative naturalist writer, Akiyoshi Tokuda, directed by Mikio Naruse. It portrays a woman who is born with a fierce temperament and easily swayed by emotions, living on despite being abandoned by men one after another, observed from a distance. Director Naruse is known for depicting strong women, but a heroine who is this raw and emotionally exposed throughout is rare. The lead actress, Hideko Takamine, celebrated for her exquisite pairing with Naruse, embodies the strength of her character with a somewhat shadowless physique, delivering a performance that explosively contrasts with her meticulous great performances in other works. The sounds of street vendors and clapping wooden clappers add rich auditory texture to the film.
