The young lady Liu Zhenglian (Lin Yu) unfortunately suffers from leprosy. Her father, Liu Yuanwai (Luo Wei), invites the poor scholar Li Xiaowen (Ling Bo) to marry her, intending to sell the illness as a curse. Zhenglian reveals the truth, and Xiaowen, moved by Zhenglian's genuine feelings, decides to return home to inform his mother and welcome Zhenglian back. Liu Yuanwai discovers that Zhenglian's leprosy has not gone away and, fearing for the family's reputation, angrily locks Zhenglian in a stone house. In despair, Zhenglian drinks poison in an attempt to end her life...
