In the early 1990s, in a heavy industrial city in Northeast China. Former steel mill worker Chen Guilin (played by Wang Qianyuan) starts a band after being laid off, struggling day and night with weddings, funerals, and shop openings, barely making ends meet. His wife, Xiaojv (played by Zhang Shenying), leaves home for a wealthy fake medicine dealer. Now Xiaojv returns glamorously, wanting not only a divorce from Guilin but also fighting for custody of their only daughter, Xiaoyuan. Feeling lamented over his failed destiny, Guilin is determined to train his daughter to become a pianist. To get the money for a piano, he desperately searches for resources, even sneaking into school at night with his girlfriend Shuxian (played by Qin Hailu) and good friends from the steel mill to steal a piano. When all efforts fail, Guilin randomly discovers a Russian book about pianos, leading him and his friends to embark on a journey to handcraft a piano in an abandoned factory...
