In 1943, in the rural area of Bologna, Italy, an eight-year-old girl named Martina (played by Greta Zuccheri Montanari) eagerly awaits the birth of her younger brother. Martina has refused to speak since her last brother died in her arms, facing mockery from the village children. However, the adults in her life, including her aunt Benignina (played by Alba Rohrwacher), love her dearly. Martina's father, Armando (played by Claudio Casadio), works tirelessly to support the family. Despite supporting the local resistance, he has to sell produce to scattered German Nazis. As the conflict between the resistance and the Nazis escalates, the war approaches ever closer. Martina silently observes everything happening in her village, including the incomprehensible killings and deaths that ultimately arrive. This film won the Jury Silver Prize and the Audience Award at the 2009 Rome Film Festival.
