During the Cold War, two major spy organizations—Russia's "The Centre" and Britain's "The Circus"—engaged in a fierce power struggle. When an agent is murdered, the higher-ups are furious and order "The Circus" to root out the "mole." There are five suspects: the Cooker, the Tailor, the Soldier, the Poor Man, and the Beggar, as named by the former head of "The Circus." The retired Beggar, George Smiley (played by Gary Oldman), is a prime suspect. One day, the head of the action group—Operation Windfall, Peter Guillam (played by Benedict Cumberbatch), along with the head of intelligence at the Cabinet Office, lays aside Smiley’s suspicion, allowing him to come back and investigate the "mole." Thus, Smiley begins to meet with old acquaintances to question them: the former boss of "The Circus," Alleline; the Tailor, Bill Haydon (played by Colin Firth); the Soldier, the seasoned spy overseeing Eastern European affairs, Roy Bland; and the Poor Man, Toby Esterhase, head of the logistics department's lighting team. Tension mounts within "The Circus," as everyone feels vulnerable. Who is the "mole" truly...? This film is based on the novel of the same name by John le Carré. The title derives from a collection of English nursery rhymes known as "Mother Goose."
