In early 1970s Beijing, adults are too busy with "revolution" to pay attention to children, and with schools closed and nothing to do, boys from military compounds, notably represented by Ma Xiaojun (played by Xia Yu), seek their own amusement. They waste their excess hormones by creating disturbances, fighting, and even sneaking into others' homes to play with their belongings. One of Ma Xiaojun's hobbies is using a master key to unlock neighbors' doors and have fun inside, which leads him to see the photo of the girl Milan (played by Ning Jing) before he meets her in person. Through the "leader" Liu Yiku (played by Geng Le) in the courtyard, Ma Xiaojun finally meets Milan again, having initially spotted her at the arms factory. He begins to see her as his dream girl, but to Milan, Ma Xiaojun is just a kid; she prefers the mature, steady, and handsome Liu Yiku. Thus begins the mixed-bag life of adolescence for Ma Xiaojun. The film is adapted from Wang Shuo's short story "Fierce Animals." Xia Yu won Best Actor (Silver Lion) at the 51st Venice International Film Festival for this role.
