Howard (Will Smith) is a successful advertising company manager who has been married to his wife Amy (Keira Knightley) for many years, and they are raising a lovely little daughter together. An accident takes the little girl's life, shattering this happy family, and Amy chooses to leave Howard. The series of blows plunges Howard into despair, leaving him unable to attend to company matters as he spends his days writing letters addressed to "Love," "Time," and "Death." The company's competitors approach Howard, hoping to acquire his advertising firm, which would mean a big payday for everyone in the company, but Howard rejects this offer, remaining absorbed in his letter writing. His decision angers several colleagues, who decide to conspire together to prove that their boss has gone mad.
