On a night in 1920s Shanghai, young worker Zhao Zhilong is killed by Nationalist military police for participating in a strike, turning the bridal chamber into a mourning hall. His newlywed wife, A Ying, is heartbroken. However, A Ying is even more worried about her junior, A Long, whose fiery temperament and hatred for evil cannot allow him to remain indifferent to his senior brother's tragic death. A Long indeed rushes back to Shanghai from afar, vowing to avenge his brother. Driven by extreme vengeance, he assassinates the middle school chief of the Nationalist garrison and the Green Gang thug Xie Laowu, leading to a police manhunt. During a fierce battle, A Long unfortunately gets injured, but sister-in-law A Ying cleverly deceives the authorities and rescues him. However, the police have launched an even more stringent manhunt. Thanks to a timely tip-off from his friend Yu Ziqing, they escape from danger and seek refuge at Uncle Ning Yuwu's home in Shaoxing. After A Long's repeated requests, Uncle asks Liu Yunfu to take him back to Shanghai for revenge. As soon as they arrive at the dock, they are discovered by the head of the Green Gang, Yang Cai Chen. The Green Gang and the warlords collude, first creating internal discord and then plotting to frame A Long. While A Long is hard at work carrying heavy loads, Yang Cai Chen secretly hides firearms in a bag of rice, resulting in A Long being accused of "smuggling weapons" and imprisoned... A Long is resolute in his desire for revenge, while Liu Yunfu has been bought off by the Green Gang. The father and son secretly operate a smoky tavern and a brothel, engaging in heinous activities. A Long angrily destroys the brothel, leading to a standoff with Liu's family. A Ying, who is deeply related to A Long's fate, is violated by Liu Yunfu's son, filled with humiliation and anger, ultimately dying with resentment. A Long is heartbroken. The cunning Yang Cai Chen then casts his bait towards Yu Ziqing, who had once shared hardships with A Long but, taking advantage of the internal collapse, betrays his brother and aligns with the Green Gang. A Long arrives in Shanghai full of dreams to seize the docks but ends up with nothing, eventually dying at the hands of Yu Ziqing. Six months later, Liu Yunfu's daughter Liu Yaqin, who had persistently pursued A Long despite many rejections, leaves Shanghai accompanied by A Long's orphan, Ning Xiaolong, for another land.
