In 1960s Hong Kong, due to the absence of his biological mother during the growing up of Ah Fei (Leslie Cheung), he elegantly compares himself to a "bird without roots." He behaves recklessly with every woman he encounters in life. Ticket seller Su Lizhen (Maggie Cheung) and dancer Mimi (Carina Lau) respectively brought him warmth, but they could only be his flings. To escape his heaviness and helplessness, Ah Fei abandons everything to search for his mother in Southeast Asia. The one who secretly loved Su Lizhen and witnessed the changes in her relationship with Ah Fei is Xiaozai (Andy Lau), who was once a small policeman and is now working on a boat. He encounters Ah Fei again in the Philippines; it is both fate and destiny, as he participates in and witnesses the rewriting of Ah Fei's fate.
