Tashi and Yangjing live together every day and are in love with each other. One day, the landlord Madame Zhuma is riding a horse for pleasure when the horse suddenly bolts in panic. In this critical moment, Tashi bravely rescues Madame Zhuma. As a result, Zhuma promises Tashi that once he pays off Yangjing's debts, she will allow them to marry. However, Lama Langse attempts to seize Yangjing, claiming that Tashi's union with Yangjing goes against divine will, and he gouges out Tashi's left eye. Yangjing swears she will never submit to Langse and is thrown into the Yarlung Tsangpo River, leaving behind a pair of newborn twin daughters, whom they name Dawa and Nima. To keep it from their master, Tashi raises them under the guise of being their "uncle". In 1957, a small group of reactionaries in Tibet prepare to revolt; by this time, Dawa and Nima are eighteen years old. They discover weapons smuggled by Zhuma from abroad. When they attempt to report it to the PLA, Langse kills Dawa. The rebellion is quelled in 1959. Nima, who joined the PLA two years earlier, returns to her hometown with the work team. The slaves rise up under the leadership of the work team, and Madame Zhuma and Lama Langse receive the punishments they deserve. Tashi and Nima are reunited, and the generations of slaves who have worked like beasts finally stand up.
