In a mountainous area in the north, the Qing Song Ling production team. One morning, young girl Xiumei (Liu Xiaomei) and young man Dahua (Wang Youlai) secretly take the team’s big cart out to practice driving. However, the horse gets startled, and thanks to the feeder Zhang Wanshan (Li Rentang) stopping the frightened horse, an accident is averted. The driver Qian Guang (Li Shunan) incites Xiumei’s brother, team leader Zhou Cheng (Zhang Baoru), to prevent the young people from learning to drive the cart, which only boosts Qian Guang's arrogance. After the new Party branch secretary Fang Jiyun (Zhu Longguang) arrives at Qing Song Ling, he realizes that Zhou Cheng only focuses on production and lacks political acumen. He decides to wrest the reins from Qian Guang and put them in the hands of his own people. Soon, a cart-driving training class is established in the village, inviting Uncle Wanshan to teach the youth how to drive the cart hands-on. Qian Guang feels resentful about this, and when the draft horse is covered in sweat, he deliberately gives it water, resulting in the horse falling ill, and he shifts the responsibility onto Xiumei. Uncle Wanshan, who cares for the horse as if it were his own child, carefully tends to the sick horse and eventually nurses it back to health. The cart once again runs along the path of socialism.
