In 1920s China, a rural woman, Zhou Lian (played by Yu Lan), marries normal university student Jiang Meiqing (played by Sun Daolin). At that time, China was on the brink of a revolutionary storm. Newly married, the couple shares deep affection. Gradually, Zhou Lian begins to misunderstand her husband's actions, unaware that he is a Communist in the Northern Expedition Army. After the failure of the revolution, her husband is brutally killed by reactionary forces. This revelation makes Zhou Lian fully aware of the brutal reality of class struggle, and she resolves to continue her husband's unfinished cause. She takes her child to Shanghai and, at the organization's request, participates in underground party work. Her eldest son, who returned from the Soviet Union, is arrested by secret police, but this does not intimidate the awakened Zhou Lian. Despite the enemy's various temptations and threats to her son’s life, Zhou Lian remains unfazed. In the end, her son sacrifices his young life.
