Henry (J.K. Simmons) and his son Gabriel (Lou Taylor Pucci) both love music, but they favor two entirely different styles. Over 20 years ago, differing political views led Gabriel to leave home and never return. Now, Gabriel is down on his luck, living on the streets, and discovers he has a brain tumor that requires surgery. However, the tumor has severely damaged his brain, and he has lost the ability to create new memories; his memories are forever stuck in 1968. To reconnect with Gabriel's world, Henry invites Diane (Julia Ormond), an expert in brain tumors and music, to help treat his son’s condition. Diane discovers that Gabriel still has an appreciation for early rock music. But this psychedelic rock from the '60s is practically unacceptable to 60-something Henry. However, to communicate with his son, he begins to research all the rock bands from the 1960s.
