To escape the forced labor in prison, McMurphy (played by Jack Nicholson) pretends to be insane and is sent to a mental hospital. His arrival brings a dramatic shock to the lifeless institution. McMurphy asks to watch a baseball game on TV, challenging the hospital's strict management, and faces resistance from the head nurse Ratched (played by Louise Fletcher). He leads the patients on a fishing trip, uplifting their spirits, much to the institution's dismay. To punish McMurphy for his defiance and repeated violations of hospital rules, they decide to keep him in the mental hospital permanently. Unable to endure the life in the institution, the free-spirited McMurphy teams up with his fellow patients, including the tall Indian "Chief," to start his own plan: to fly over the cuckoo's nest. The film won five Academy Awards at the 48th Oscars in 1975, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The protagonist's spirit of "better to be free than to be dead" still holds significant relevance in today's society.
