Sister Xiang Er (played by Siqin Gaowa) is a shrewd and capable shopkeeper. The sesame oil factory she runs has received investment from a Japanese businesswoman, making it quite prosperous. However, she sometimes feels a deep sadness because her role as a wife and mother tears her apart emotionally. Her husband (played by Lei Kesheng), who is disabled and an alcoholic, and their child, who is born with intellectual disabilities, have placed tremendous mental pressure on her. The only times she feels joy are when she is with her lover (played by Chen Baoguo), but his cowardice and avoidance of issues gradually shatter her hopes... In order to find a good wife for her son, she once tried to enlist the help of a matchmaker, but most of the young women who responded were more interested in her family wealth. In the end, she resorted to a desperate measure by breaking apart a pair of devoted lovers and using money to pressure the kind-hearted girl Huan Huan (played by Wu Yujuan) to comply. However, the developments that followed were far beyond her expectations... This film won the Golden Bear Award for Best Film at the 43rd Berlin Film Festival in 1993.
