One day, cavalryman Jim (Richard Widmark) found his old friend, the town sheriff MacKaye (James Stewart), and asked him for a favor to rescue people who had once been kidnapped by Indians. In the end, the two successfully saved the boy Quick Wolf (David Kent) and a woman named Elena (Shirley Jones). Little did they know that this action would provoke the wrath and pursuit of Stone Bull (Woody Strode), who was ultimately shot dead by MacKaye. Back at the base, Quick Wolf and Elena were not welcomed by the locals and faced rejection everywhere; only the kind Mrs. McKanrey (Jeanette Nolan) was willing to take Quick Wolf in. Over time, MacKaye gradually fell in love with the strong-willed Elena.
