This film is adapted from Lao She's novel of the same name. Toiling rural youth Xiangzi (played by Zhang Fengyi) lives in the outskirts of old Beijing. After losing his land and parents, Xiangzi comes to Beijing to work as a rickshaw puller at Liu Si's rickshaw factory. He works tirelessly day and night, hoping to save enough money to buy his own rickshaw and no longer have to rent from others. Xiangzi finally manages to gather 100 yuan to buy a new rickshaw, but not long after, he is captured along with his rickshaw by a warlord's thugs. In the army, Xiangzi is tasked with using the rickshaw to transport artillery shells. When the unit is defeated and retreats, Xiangzi's rickshaw rolls down a valley. The soldiers scatter, and Xiangzi unexpectedly finds three camels in the army. He sells the camels and returns to Liu Si's factory to work as a rickshaw puller, where people nickname him "Camel Xiangzi." Liu Si's daughter Huniu (played by Siqin Gaowa) takes a liking to Xiangzi and gets him drunk with alcohol…
