Luke leads a con man group operating in Joliet, near Chicago. One day, one of his men brings him a large sum of money that they just scammed. Soon after, Luke is murdered. It turns out that this money was the gambling winnings just collected by the Chicago mob boss, Lonigan (played by Robert Shaw), and it was this money that brought Luke to his demise. Hook (played by Robert Redford) is one of Luke's subordinates, whom Luke treats like his own son, even wanting to introduce him to his friend in Chicago, the master con artist Gondorff (played by Paul Newman) to learn the tricks of the trade. Hook vows to avenge Luke, so he goes to Chicago to find Gondorff. Hook successfully finds Gondorff, and upon hearing that their enemy is Lonigan, Gondorff immediately gets ready for action. Thus, a flawless con plan begins!
