"The Three Kings" tells the story of the three kings visiting to pay homage at the birth of Jesus. However, the film does not glorify this story; instead, it employs a very flat technique to depict it, presenting the three kings merely as ordinary people. Most of the time is spent illustrating their arduous journey to find the birthplace of Jesus and the challenges they encounter, the biggest of which is getting lost in the mountains and finding their way. In recent years, among many new directors, Spanish Catalan director Albert Serra is considered quite controversial. His films are so simplistic, even rudimentary, that while many people highly praise them (for example, the French publication "Cahiers du Cinéma" once ranked his previous film "Honour of the Knights" [2006] as the seventh best film of 2007), others question whether he is merely riding the wave of the current trend of slow, long takes in art films to create something that could be seen as "the emperor's new clothes."
