The story takes place in a hotel located in Bournemouth, England, where some rooms are rented long-term, thus gathering a group of "regulars." Sibyl (Deborah Kerr) is an old maid with a peculiar personality, living under the control of her domineering mother, Mrs. Maud. In reality, Sibyl secretly admires a man named David (David Niven), but her shyness leads her to bury these feelings deep within her heart.
