"Berlin School" German emerging female director Maria Speth's 2007 work. This year, her documentary "Mr. Bachmann and His Class" won the Silver Bear for the Jury at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival, receiving widespread attention from film enthusiasts. This distinctive film is not only the only documentary in the main competition section but also the longest, with a runtime of 217 minutes, edited from over 200 hours of substantial footage. Her films often focus on new immigrants in Germany, and as early as 2007, this film "Madonna" was already addressing this topic. Of course, "Madonna" is not a documentary but still quite realistic, telling the story of a German woman named Rita, who never acknowledges her mother. Rita has six children and forces her mother to act as the mother to her grandchildren. Oh dear, why does this sound so much like that bizarre story from Korea a few days ago? Of course, this is an art film and doesn't have so many strange plot twists. This film explores social issues in Germany completely from a female perspective. At the beginning of the story, as a young German mother, Rita goes to America alone with a baby to find her biological father, but the father already has his own family and does not want this stranger intruding, shattering Rita's dreams. As the story shifts back to Germany, the atmosphere grows more somber, and the conflict between Rita and her mother escalates. Several of Rita's children come from different fathers, and she leaves them at her mother's house so she can go out with friends. The film captures the psychology of human nature so accurately, seemingly wanting to indicate Rita's disconnection from the world around her rather than exploring the potential reasons behind it. At this point, an African American soldier enters her life and accommodates Rita and her children. In terms of visual presentation, the director intentionally chose a monotone and gray semi-documentary style, creatively filling Rita's new apartment with more furniture and decorations, and showcasing more colors as the story progresses. Overall, this female director deserves our increased attention. The Berlin School (German: Berliner Schule) (the French magazine "Nouvel Observateur" referred to the works of these distinct young German directors as "nouvelle nouvelle vague") refers to a new film movement that emerged from the mid-1990s to the early 21st century, used to describe a series of German films highly regarded by critics abroad (especially in France). The Berlin School does not have a clear film style or standard, but many film works deal with interpersonal and social relationships, recording the changes in contemporary German society through implicit characters, emotions, or scenes. --乱耳飞舞字幕组
