Coach White (Kevin Costner) is a talented but abrasive high school football coach who is dismissed due to a violent incident, closing the door to further employment at other high schools. In desperation, White moves to the impoverished and remote town of McFarland, California, taking a position at the local high school. The town's residents are largely Mexican immigrants, poor and rough-around-the-edges, vastly different from kids in big cities. Trying to curb his temper, White hopes to return to the city soon to improve the lives of his wife and daughters. During this time, he discovers the extraordinary talent these Mexican boys have for long-distance running. To that end, he manages to convince the principal, students, and parents to form the school's first cross-country team. His initial intent might have been just to use it as a stepping stone, but he ends up changing his own life and the lives of the kids... This film is based on a true story that took place in 1987.
