Fang Baoqing (Li Xuejian) is a performer of large drum storytelling, supporting a family of five on his own, living a very hard life. The adopted daughter Xiulian learns large drum storytelling from Baoqing, and their bond is very strong. When the Japanese army attacks, Baoqing flees to Chongqing with his family and coincidentally meets an old friend, Mr. Tang, with whom he quickly strikes a deal to open a storytelling venue named "Shengping," which thrives.
