In March 1947, the Kuomintang's Hu Zongnan faction, with a force of 15 divisions, invaded Yan'an. Chiang Kai-shek arrogantly declared that he would capture Yan'an within three days, hoping to exchange it for U.S. dollars from his imperialist masters. The enemy's 31st Division was the vanguard, and they had begun their frenzied assault on Yan'an. To better buy time and concentrate forces to eliminate the enemy, one of our divisions was tasked with defending Yan'an and halting the enemy's advance. The division's headquarters analyzed the enemy situation and determined that if the enemy wanted to attack Yan'an, they would have to pass through the strategic pass at Songshuling. Accordingly, the headquarters assigned the mission of holding Songshuling to the Second Company, which was directly commanded by the division's headquarters. The political instructor of the Second Company was killed, leading the division commander to send Su Qiang to command them, instructing the company to hold firm from Heights 92 to Songshuling for seven days. Just as the enemy was about to capture the positions, Su Qiang and communications officer Liu Xiaolin arrived, and he immediately engaged in command of the battle, successfully repelling the enemy's advance. Upon arriving at the front, Su Qiang discovered that some soldiers in the Second Company harbored an attitude of underestimating the enemy, so he timely helped them correct this mindset and organized the soldiers to repair fortifications, repelling dozens of enemy assaults. At that moment, the right flank position of Heights 92 was captured by the enemy, rendering the defense of Heights 92 meaningless. The division headquarters then ordered the Second Company to withdraw to Songshuling to hold this area. The soldiers were puzzled by and disagreed with the higher command's decision to withdraw. However, under Su Qiang's persuasion, they carried out the orders. Brutal fighting unfolded at Songshuling. After several days of battle, the enemy was still unable to advance toward Yan'an. At this point, the cunning enemy division commander organized a feigned frontal attack while attempting to outflank Songshuling, seeking to encircle the Second Company. Su Qiang and others discovered the enemy's ruse and decided on a countermeasure, successfully repelling the enemy with the cooperation of guerrilla forces. The enemy became increasingly frantic and ordered their entire division to shell Songshuling; the fighting was extremely fierce… After six days and nights of combat, the Second Company was surrounded. To buy time, hold up the enemy, and resolutely complete the mission of holding for seven days and nights at Songshuling, the soldiers, under Su Qiang’s command, demonstrated tenacious will and courageous fighting spirit, ultimately repelling the enemy and reclaiming the almost lost positions at Songshuling. During the seven days and nights that the Second Company fought against the enemy, our army, following Chairman Mao's guidance to eliminate the enemy in large numbers without fixating on losses of a city or territory, took the initiative to abandon Yan'an. Meanwhile, our main forces began to concentrate along the Jinpenwan line. At this time, preparations for the Qinhua Bian campaign had long been completed. The soldiers of the Second Company, under Su Qiang’s command and the cooperation of friendly forces, completed their task of delaying the enemy and received commendation from Chairman Mao, earning the title of "Hero Company." The division headquarters ordered the Hero Company to withdraw from Songshuling, but the soldiers still did not understand the significance of retreat and felt some resistance to the idea. However, when they withdrew to Qinhua Bian and saw the large forces, three to four times larger than the enemy, spread across the mountains, they finally understood the strategic significance of holding out for seven days and nights at Songshuling. After the enemy arrogantly entered Yan'an, intent on finding our main forces for a decisive battle, they fell into our trap of luring them deeper. The enemy's vanguard, the 31st Division, was led into the bag-shaped position set up at Qinhua Bian. When the enemy troops entered our ambush zone, the Qinhua Bian campaign commenced. The so-called undefeated 31st Division was completely annihilated. Our army achieved a victorious end to the great Qinhua Bian campaign.
